Creating a successful affiliate program isn’t easy.  There is a lot of work involved; some people are naturally suited for it and some are not.  Even those with natural abilities need to work hard to develop them into a valuable skill set.

Here are five signs that you may have natural instincts towards affiliate management:

1.  You see the big picture – but don’t forget about the details

A big part of creating a promotion to drive sales is the ability to see ‘the big picture’.  A great affiliate manager will have an end goal in mind that they are working towards.  Sometimes, lots of planning is required to create a successful campaign and that means lots of details to watch over.

2.  You know your way around the internet

A great affiliate manager is web savvy and feels confident researching the internet for information, as well as putting emails into an autoresponder and doing other internet-related tasks.

3.  Good communication skills

Being able to communicate with others plays a huge role in many careers, including affiliate management.  The business affiliates are likely to be scattered across North America and even throughout the globe.  That means that the affiliate manager will need to be a top-notch communicator in order to get important information and messages across.

This includes staying up to date with emails and letting affiliates know in advance about product enhancements, price changes, sales, and contests.

If an affiliate manager lets this duty slide, the affiliate may forget about the program and about promoting it.  Staying in touch with affiliates on a regular and consistent basis will equal more sales in the long run.

4.  Ability to motivate others

One trait that really sets a great affiliate manager apart from others is the ability to motivate others.  This can be very challenging indeed.  Inspiring others to work hard and push sales is a huge part of running a successful affiliate program.  Some of this needs to come from within, but this is something that can be learned.

5.  Good writing skills

As you can imagine from the example about communication, a great affiliate manager will need good writing skills.  This, of course, comes into play when communicating with affiliates, but also when communicating with the potential customer.

Depending on the budget at hand, an affiliate manager may need to create tools for the affiliates to use, such as articles, blog posts, and small reports, as well as the sales copy.

Taking the time to develop the above skills is well worth it, as exceptional affiliate managers are hard to come by and are definitely in demand.  Even if a person does not want to hire themselves out to others as an affiliate manager, these skills can come in handy when creating an affiliate program for your own products and services.
